Invading Ireland is the only backstop solution say Brexiteers
A senior cabal of hardline Tories led by arch Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg is advocating for an immediate invasion of the Irish Republic to settle the thorny issue of the Irish ‘backstop’.
The backstop, intended to ensure there will never be a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, has become a key bargaining chip in the Brexit negotiations, with many Brexiteers believing it is the only thing standing in the way of finding a palatable ‘no-deal’ Brexit.
While initially, hard Brexiteers hoped the the EU would comprise, it became clear Brussels was not about to abandon the Republic – an EU poster boy. Rees Mogg, who chairs the ERG, a ultra-hardline Brexit cohort, said:
“The Republic should never have been allowed to run her own affairs, let alone stand in the way of Britain’s glorious destiny.
“Ireland has become a spineless EU puppet, and left us with no choice but to invade. Bringing the Irish Republic back into our Union will not only benefit Britain, but will bring civilisation back to this dismal back water.
